Hello Radio Operators:
Well the heat of summer has been with us the first part of August. The cool of September is what I like the most after the hot summer. Victoria Springs was one of the best times ever. The temperature was great. On Thursday night July 24th, we had a rain and wild storm pass thought the camp ground .70 of rain that made the grass green up real nice while we were there. If you didn't get to come this year, plan to come next year in 2009. We were only 10 people short of being the same count as in 2007 not bad for the gas prices being so high. Everyone has a good time and at least 4 campers stayed an extra day, I was one of the campers.

Greetings ARES
Friends,
I am sure we all are
very aware of what Mother Nature can and will do. The tornado that destroyed
the Kearney area and the ice storm that left everyone virtually helpless.
Unfortunately, that is Nebraska.
I know I learned
lessons in a survival situation that disabled much of Central Nebraska during
the ice storm. Fortunately I had an ample supply of batteries for the power
outage—but I was not really prepared.
I always thought that
the go kit (which was really never put together do to my laziness) would serve
my loved ones, neighbors, etc., very well.
Needless to say, what
a rude awakening! My thoughts were well off base in consideration of coolers
for perishable items and of course the means to cook, as I live in a totally
electric apartment house.
As it is getting into
fall type weather we need to take an inventory of the essential items that we
as families need in the event of any type of disaster. Many people have read
numerous articles on emergency preparedness, but some, myself included, fluff
it off until there is an actual disaster.
Probably the
instrument I used most in the Kearney County area was my hand held scanner.
Again batteries, non-perishable food goods, extra blankets and whatever you may
need—keep these handy. Also keep extra gas in your vehicle at all times.
Amateur
Radio is an excellent means of communication during such disasters, but towers
and cell phones, etc. do go down. As I have learned, always plan ahead. I
believe I have become somewhat smarter due to unforeseen events.
Everyone knows the
drill, so read up if you already have not and take care. I thought I knew
the basics, unfortunately I did not.
